Bank of New York Mellon Corp. on Tuesday said Mitchell Harris would retire on Oct. 1 as chief executive of BNY Mellon Investment Management, which includes the company's wealth- and investment-management businesses.

The New York bank said it has named Hanneke Smits as CEO of BNY Mellon Investment Management, while Catherine Keating would continue as CEO of BNY Mellon Wealth Management.

BNY said Ms. Smits and Ms. Keating would report to Chief Executive Todd Gibbons, adding that Ms. Smits, who has been CEO of its Newton Investment Management unit since August 2016, will join its executive committee.

BNY said Ms. Smits would remain CEO of Newton until Oct. 1, and that a search is underway for a successor.

Mr. Harris has been CEO of BNY Mellon Investment Management since February 2016.
