Georgia Power said Friday the last of six containment rings for the Vogtle 3 & 4 nuclear expansion project has been put in place at the construction site near Waynesboro, Ga.

Georgia Power said the ring placement was the latest of several construction milestones recently achieved, including placement of the final reinforced concrete portion of the Unit 4 shield building and placement of the upper inner casing for the Unit 3 high-pressure turbine.

Plant Vogtle units 3 and 4 will be the first new nuclear units built in the U.S. in the last three decades, Georgia Power said, adding the project currently employs 8,000 workers and will lead to 800 jobs once the units begin operation.

Georgia Power is the largest electric subsidiary of Southern Co. (SO).
