Retail stocks were mixed Thursday, as investors weighed Walmart reporting its strongest sales growth in more than a decade and J.C. Penney lowering its full-year earnings outlook. Shares of Walmart rose 10%. Shares of Target, which is also set to report next week, rose 1.7%, while Costco Wholesale was up 0.3%. Shares of department stores, however, were trading lower. J.C. Penney, which reported a steeper quarterly loss Thursday, traded down 23%. Sears and Kohl's were down 7% and 0.3%, respectively. Shares of Nordstrom, which is set to release its quarterly results after the bell, fell 0.2%. (robert.barba@wsj.com; @barbawire)
