AK Steel Announces the AK Steel Foundation's 2018 Sons and Daughters Scholarship Recipients

AK Steel (NYSE:AKS) announced today that the AK Steel Foundation is
continuing a longstanding tradition this year by awarding 20
college scholarships to sons and daughters of company
employees. The awards recognize outstanding academic
achievement, leadership and community involvement.
"Earning an AK Steel Foundation scholarship is an
outstanding achievement, as the selection process is very
competitive and rigorous," said Roger K. Newport, Chief Executive
Officer of AK Steel. "We congratulate all of our 2018
scholars and their families and offer our best wishes for a
successful academic career."
The AK Steel Sons and Daughters Scholarships are
funded by the AK Steel Foundation and are worth a maximum of
$20,000 each. The Middletown, Ohio Community Foundation
independently reviews the applications and selects each
recipient.
2018 Scholarship Recipients:
- Morgan Baumann, daughter of Timothy Baumann of
Cincinnati, Ohio and Jill Baumann Freudenberg of Hebron,
Kentucky. Morgan attends Conner High School in Hebron,
Kentucky where she is a member of the National Honor Society.
Morgan is an active member of the academic team, leadership league
and robotics team. Morgan plans to major in civil engineering
at the University of Kentucky. Her father, Tim, works in the
Cold Strip Mill at the company’s Middletown Works.
- Nadia Braswell, daughter of Justin Braswell of
Westland, Michigan and Rebecca Haggerty of Romulus, Michigan.
Nadia attends Woodhaven High School in Brownstown Charter Township,
Michigan where she is a member of the National Honor Society and
president of her school’s diversity club. Nadia is also a
member of the tennis team, marching band and Interact Charity
Club. Nadia plans to major in political science at the
University of Michigan. Her father, Justin, works in the
Apprentice Maintenance Training Department at the company’s
Dearborn Works.
- Nicholas Braun, son of Richard and Elizabete
Braun of Mason, Ohio. Nicholas attends Kings High School in
Kings Mills, Ohio where he is a member of the National Honor
Society and environment club. Nicholas is also active in the
school’s marching band, pep band, jazz band and symphonic band.
He plans to major in computer engineering at The Ohio State
University. Nicholas’ father, Richard, works in the
Electrical Maintenance and Control Department at the company’s
Middletown Works.
- Robert “Isaac” Campbell, son of Bruce “Doug”
and Julie Campbell of Ashland, Kentucky. Isaac attends
Fairview Independent High School in Ashland, Kentucky where he is a
member of the National Honor Society. He is also active in
football, track, basketball, Key Club and Future Business Leaders
of America. Isaac plans to major in space science at Morehead
State University. His father, Doug, works in the Basic Oxygen
Maintenance Department at the company’s Ashland Works.
- Patricia “Tricia” Esarey, daughter of Nova
James and step-daughter of Steve James of Tell City, Indiana.
Tricia attends Perry Central High School in Leopold, Indiana
where she is a member of the National Honor Society and Key
Club. She also is a member of her school’s cheerleading and
volleyball teams. Tricia plans to attend Ball State
University to study audiology and speech language pathology.
Her step-father, Steve, works in the Contract Administration
Department at the company’s Rockport Works.
- Golda Gershanok, daughter of Alexander and
Deborah Gershanok of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Golda attends Mt.
Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she is a
member of the school’s student council and principal’s advisory
board. She is also active in tennis and founded the Politics
and Pizza Club. Golda plans to major in biomedical
engineering at Georgia Tech University. Her father,
Alexander, works in the Cold Mill Department at the company’s
Butler Works.
- Macie Kercsmar, daughter of Michael and
Melanie Kercsmar of Galena, Ohio. Macie attends Big Walnut
High School in Sunbury, Ohio where she is a member of the National
Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Math Honor Society.
She is also a member of her school’s tennis team. Macie
plans to major in pre-medicine at the University of Tennessee.
Her father, Michael, works in the Operations Department at
the company’s Headquarters.
- Samuel Martin, son of Ryan and Sally Martin of
Santa Claus, Indiana. Samuel attends Heritage Hills High
School in Lincoln City, Indiana where he is class president and
active on his school’s swim team. He also is a member of the
National Honor Society and Beta Club. Samuel plans to major
in business administration and management at Indiana University.
Samuel’s father, Ryan, works in the Customer Technical
Services Department at the company’s Rockport Works.
- Bradlee McIntosh, son of David and Angela
McIntosh of Madison Township, Ohio. Bradlee attends Madison
High School in Madison Township, Ohio where he is a member of the
school’s soccer team. Bradlee is also a member of the
National Honor Society, science club and steel band. Bradlee
will attend Ohio Northern University and major in theoretical and
mathematical physics. His father, David, works in the
Electrical Maintenance and Control Department at the company’s
Middletown Works.
- Clay Potochny, son of Eric and Diane Potochny
of Butler, Pennsylvania. Clay attends Butler Area Senior High
in Butler, Pennsylvania. He served as captain of the varsity
ice hockey team. Clay plans to major in mechanical or material
science engineering at Virginia Tech University. Clay’s
father, Eric, works in the Hot Mill Maintenance Department at the
company’s Butler Works.
- Alyssa Prince, daughter of Richard and
Kimberly Prince of Dresden, Ohio. Alyssa attends Tri-Valley
High School in Dresden, Ohio where she is active in student
council. She is also an active volunteer for Camp Invention
and at her church. Alyssa will major in education at Ohio
University-Zanesville. Her father, Richard, works in the
Electrical Maintenance Department at the company’s Coshocton
Works.
- Clinton Ransom, son of Keith and Kim Ransom of
Germantown, Ohio. Clinton attends Valley View High School in
Germantown, Ohio where he is a member of the National Honor Society
and student council. He also is active with the Valley View
Ping Pong Club. Clinton will major in business marketing at
Miami University. His father, Keith, works in the Hot Strip
Mill at the company’s Middletown Works.
- Carli Robinette, daughter of Richard “Mark”
and Kimberly Robinette of Ashland, Kentucky. Carli attends
Boyd County High School in Ashland, Kentucky where she is active in
the National Honor Society and student council. She also is
active in dance, Key Club, Mu Alpha Theta and pep club. Carli will
major in dance at Northern Kentucky University. Her father,
Mark, works in the Finishing Department at the company’s Ashland
Works.
- Adam Short, son of Aaron and Barbara Short of
Franklin, Ohio. Adam attends Bishop Fenwick High School in
Franklin, Ohio where he is a member of the National Honor Society
and French Club. He also is a member of the school’s cross
country and tennis teams, and a participant in 4-H of Warren
County. Adam plans to major in accounting at Xavier
University. His father, Aaron, works at the Basic Oxygen
Furnace at the company’s Middletown Works.
- Brooke Sizemore, daughter of Christopher and
Gina Sizemore of Franklin, Ohio. Brooke attends Franklin High
School in Franklin, Ohio where she is a member of the National
Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. She also is active
in cheerleading, student government and Spanish Club. Brooke
will major in kinesiology at Miami University. Her father,
Christopher, works in the Electrical Maintenance and Control
Department at the company’s Middletown Works.
- Matthew Smith, son of Patrick and Pamela Smith
of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. Matthew attends Chartiers
Valley High School in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania where he is active
in tennis, showband and Spanish Club. He is also a member of
the National Honor Society. Matthew plans to major in
computer engineering at Pennsylvania State University. His
father, Patrick, works in the Environmental Affairs Department at
the company’s Mountain State Carbon facility.
- Emili Stephens, daughter of Lance and Ginger
Stephens of Tell City, Indiana. Emili attends Tell City Jr. –
Sr. High School in Tell City, Indiana where she is a member of the
school’s volleyball and softball teams. She is also a member
of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Key Club and pep
club. Emili will attend the University of Evansville where
she will major in biology/chemistry – pre-dental. Her father,
Lance, works at the Continuous Galvanizing Line at the company’s
Rockport Works.
- Elaine Suer, daughter of Mark and Faye Suer of
Liberty Township, Ohio. Elaine attends Lakota East High
School in Liberty Township, Ohio where she is active in Latin Club
and Spanish Club. She is also active in the school’s computer
programming club. Elaine will major in liberal arts at the
University of Cincinnati. Her father, Mark, works in the
Primary Process Research Department at the company’s Research and
Innovation Center.
- Makayla Waltman, daughter of Charlotte and
Timothy Waltman of Fenelton, Pennsylvania. Makayla attends Karns
City High School in Karns City, Pennsylvania where she is a member
of the volleyball and cheerleading teams. She is also active
in student council, National Honor Society, drama club and Spanish
Club. Makayla will major in physician assistant studies at
Gannon University. Her father, Timothy, works in the Silicon
Department at the company’s Butler Works.
- Alec Weber, son of Dwayne and Linda Weber of
Chicora, Pennsylvania. Alec attends Karns City High School in
Karns City, Pennsylvania where he is a member of the soccer and
cross country teams. He is a member of the National Honor
Society and participates in math club and serves as a board member
for the Karns City Scholastic Foundation. Alec plans to major
in pharmaceutical science at Duquesne University. His father,
Dwayne, works in the Mobile Maintenance Department at the company’s
Butler Works.
