Dow innovations recognized as "best of the best" by the world's top senior business executives, academics, and innovation professionals

Four breakthrough technologies from The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) were recognized with prestigious Edison Awards on April 11, 2018. Selected from thousands of nominees, the winners were announced at the annual Edison Awards Gala in New York City. EA-4600 LV Hot Melt RTV Translucent silicone technology and Dow Performance Silicones Moldable Optical Silicone each earned silver Edison Awards. Dow’s EVOLV3D™ Universal Support Material received a bronze award. A bronze Edison Award also went to Blue4est® with ROPAQUE™ NT-2900 Hollow Sphere Pigments from Dow and The Koehler Paper Group. The Edison Awards honor excellence in new product and service development, marketing, human-centered design, and innovation.

“Thomas Edison developed the industrial laboratory, focusing invention on well-defined market needs. It has been called research with a purpose,” said A.N. Sreeram, senior vice president, Research & Development, and chief technology officer for Dow. “Just like Edison, our research is customer focused, solving customer and societal needs and creating value for our shareholders. We are pleased to receive this recognition for our innovations and innovators.”

EA-4600 LV Hot Melt RTV Translucent Silicone Technology – Silver

Jet dispensing delivers speed and accuracy to address trends towards increasing miniaturization and high-throughput manufacturing of consumer electronic devices. This product delivers a unique combination of reliable, fast processability, primerless adhesion to a variety of substrates, ingress protection, and a durable seal.

Dow Performance Silicones Moldable Optical Silicone – Silver

Moldable optical silicones are a new tool for innovation in the automotive lighting world with unprecedented design freedom and photothermal stability. These two part liquid injection moldable transparent materials provide benefits to optical elements including reduced weight, cost savings, optical stability and ease of manufacture.

EVOLV3D™ Universal Support Material – Bronze

The EVOLV3D™ Universal Support Material (USM) is a game changer for 3D printing. Useful with most common build materials, no longer must consumers mix-and-match build and support for a good print. Also, EVOLV3D is water soluble at room temperature and non-hazardous, making removal and disposal easy.

Blue4est® with ROPAQUE™ NT-2900 Hollow Sphere Pigments – Bronze

Regulatory and consumer concern over chemical developers, such as bisphenol A (BPA), is driving a search for replacement chemicals. Blue4est® with ROPAQUE™ NT-2900 takes a completely different approach and eliminates the chemical developer entirely. A layer of opaque polymer spheres effectively hide an underlying colored layer. Exposure to heat collapses the air-filled polymer spheres making the colored layer visible.

The Edison Awards namesake, Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), was an American-born inventor and businessman. Over the course of his life, Edison received a staggering 1,093 U.S. patents for market-disrupting technologies such as the electric light bulb and phonograph.

Dow shares in Edison’s passion for ingenuity and patent productivity; the Company’s research and development engine was responsible for 789 U.S. patents granted in 2017; the ninth consecutive annual increase and an all-time record high for Dow. Such patents, based on Dow innovation, help drive patent-advantaged sales that represent more than 20 percent of Dow’s revenue.
