Sonic Foundry, Inc. (NASDAQ: SOFO), the trusted global leader for
video creation and management solutions, today announces Florida
Atlantic University has selected Mediasite campus wide to create
online learning content and serve as the central dynamic repository
for all academic video files on campus.
The south Florida university began using Mediasite in May 2017
for lecture capture in the College of Business, Charles E. Schmidt
College of Medicine, and the College of Engineering and Computer
Science, as well as its Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute,
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and Office of Information
Technology. Mediasite is integrated across campus to capture
lectures in 98 courses for students to review on-demand. As a
result, the university has seen explosive growth of video usage. To
date, faculty have created about 12,900 videos that have already
been viewed 314,500 times.
“FAU used a video solution prior to choosing Mediasite, but it
lacked an intuitive back-end management system that easily
organized its videos. One of the things we liked best about
Mediasite was its ability to flexibly organize recordings,” said
Joanne Julia, Director of Instructional Technologies, Office of IT
at FAU. “Plus, there are Mediasite solutions to fit any classroom
size and budget, so it was an affordable option for us. Mediasite
worked hand-in-hand with us on the conversion of our thousands of
existing videos to ensure a seamless transition.”
Faculty Embrace Video with Personal Capture
In addition to the classroom lectures, instructors use Mediasite
capture software solutions to quickly create videos and communicate
with students from any location. This allows them to provide more
flexible and personalized learning experiences for students.
- Micro Learning and Academic Video. My
Mediasite is installed on hundreds of faculty computers and mobile
devices, allowing them to create short videos from anywhere.
They’re flipping classes, supplementing homework assignments and
elaborating on topics based on student feedback.
- Distance Learning. Mediasite Join video
conference capture allows faculty to record everything said and
shown during class, delivering the same interactive video
experience to students. Mediasite Join integrates with FAU’s video
conferencing system, Cisco.
Making Legacy Videos Useful and Searchable
Again
With Mediasite, FAU has also undertaken a content management
initiative to preserve the thousands of hours of lecture videos
amassed from its previous video platform. More than 10,000 videos
so far that exist in various formats have been imported to
Mediasite to be incorporated into today’s instruction.
All of the videos are managed in Mediasite Video Cloud and
available for students to watch through the university’s Canvas
learning management system.
“The Mediasite team made our massive video migration project a
smooth transition, which greatly benefited our faculty,” said Adam
Campbell, Manager of Videoconferencing Services in FAU’s Office of
IT. “Because these videos are now in Mediasite Video Platform,
they’re easily searchable and readily available as course
supplements for faculty and study tools for students.”
“Mediasite is an excellent study tool for students. They enjoy
the ability to watch the videos, which are very high quality and
available almost immediately, on their mobile devices,” Julia said.
“Top industry analysts recognize Mediasite as a leader in
lecture capture, helping schools increase student success, stay
competitive and manage the valuable knowledge being shared every
second of the day in classrooms across the globe,” said Gary Weis,
CEO, Sonic Foundry. “Florida Atlantic University is among a growing
number of schools – in Florida and around the world – that
understands by giving its students access to academic video, its
setting them up for the most success. We’re excited that Mediasite
is at the heart of FAU’s digital video strategy.”
Trusted by more than 1,600 colleges and universities, the
patented Mediasite webcasting and video content management system
quickly and cost-effectively automates the capture, management,
delivery and search of live and on-demand videos for campus events,
lecture capture and flipped learning.
