Chevron Corp. (CVX) reported the shutdown of a compressor and flaring of gas emissions Thursday at its Richmond, Calif. refinery.

In a statement to the California Emergency Management Agency, Chevron said a hydrogen compressor shut down due to "unknown reasons," and this led to flaring with the potential release of more than 500 pounds of sulfur dioxide.

The 245,000-barrel-a-day refinery is located just north of Oakland.
