Ixia (NASDAQ: XXIA), a leading provider of network testing, visibility, and security solutions, today announced that Barefoot Networks chose Ixia’s 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) test solutions to validate its Tofino™ series of high-performance programmable switches. Ixia solutions will help Barefoot ensure Tofino switches deliver the performance network operators need, in addition to testing those features made possible by its programmable packet processing pipeline, such as new and custom protocols, in-band network telemetry, and load balancing.

Barefoot’s Tofino switches use a unique technology that enables a fully programmable Ethernet switch without any performance penalty to its 6.5 Tb/s traffic processing capability. Using Ixia’s industry-leading IxNetwork® and Novus™ 100GE solutions, Barefoot test engineers recreate real-life traffic patterns and load characteristics to validate the performance, scale, and quality of their high-performance switches.

“Programmable forwarding planes are expected to transform the next generation of mega-scale data center networks,” stated Dan Lenoski, Co-Founder and Vice President of Engineering at Barefoot. “Our Tofino switches are transforming the way network owners are designing and building their networks, giving them the performance they need and the flexibility and visibility they desire strongly. To fully vet our technology in real-world use cases, we selected Ixia’s IxNetwork and Novus 100GE test system. Ixia’s robust, line-rate testing surpassed our performance and protocol emulation needs.”

Ixia’s industry leading test solutions

IxNetwork is a comprehensive chip, device, and network infrastructure test solution, validating Layer 2-3 (L2-3) performance, interoperability, and functionality. Capable of analyzing up to four million traffic flows simultaneously, IxNetwork offers enhanced real-time analysis and statistics. With eight native QSP28 100GE ports, Ixia's Novus load modules generate multiple terabytes of data to simulate real-world network test traffic and L2-3 protocols. Together, these solutions are the ideal test platform for full line-rate 100GE evaluation of application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designs, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and hardware switch fabrics.

“No two networks in the world are exactly the same. Recreating unique traffic characteristics without compromising performance and scale is critical to validate next generation data center network infrastructure,” said Sunil Kalidindi, Vice President of Product Management at Ixia. “We designed our Novus and IxNetwork test solution with precisely this in mind. The Novus 100GE hardware platform is uniquely capable of scaling to multiple Terabits/s and in conjunction with the industry’s leading L2-3 IxNetwork test application enables users to create cloud-scale control and data plane under realistic network conditions. This allows advanced features like the in-line telemetry to be tested at real world scale. We are delighted that Barefoot chose Ixia and is able to leverage these capabilities to deliver game changing solutions to the market."
