Corporation for Public Broadcasting Member Stations Select Harris for HD Radio(TM) Transmission Equipment CINCINNATI, March 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation announced today that several member stations of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in the original digital transition markets have selected Harris' Broadcast Communications Division to supply digital-ready radio transmission equipment. Thirteen of these CPB member stations will receive the Harris ZHD(TM) FM Digital Transmitter and the DEXSTAR(TM) HD Radio FM Exciter. With the addition of the DEXSTAR FM Exciter, these stations will be able to broadcast high-quality digital audio with the ability to offer additional services such as supplementary audio channels and 5.1 surround sound. Of the stations receiving transmitters, 12 also will obtain a Harris NeuStar(TM) Audio Codec Processor, which prepares and optimizes audio content prior to encoding, improving the digital broadcast chain and significantly enhancing codec performance for the lower bit rates required by HD Radio. Funding for the purchases comes from CPB grants to member stations for the conversion to digital radio. This is the first of three rounds of funding provided by CPB, a non-profit corporation. The following are some of the CPB stations that have purchased Harris ZHD transmitters and NeuStar codec processors: *KOUW-FM, Seattle, Wash. *WDNA-FM, Miami, Fla. *KCRW-FM, Santa Monica, Calif. *WLRN-FM, Miami, Fla. *WAMU-FM, Washington, D.C. *WABE-FM, Atlanta, Ga. *KALW, San Francisco, Calif. Additionally, KSCM-FM, San Mateo, Calif., has also chosen a Harris ZHD transmitter and ERI 4 Bay antenna, and WXEL-FM, West Palm Beach, Fla. has chosen to upgrade its current Z transmitter to a digital Z16HDc FM transmitter. With HD Radio, radio stations will be able to deliver dramatically improved sound clarity and reception for both AM and FM radio stations, as well as developing exciting new datacasting possibilities such as music and artist identification, weather and traffic reports, and expanded news and sports information. In the near future, radio broadcasts will able to offer 5.1 surround sound and supplementary audio channels on FM, rich-media contact on demand, and broadcasts over new digital receivers, cell phones, PDAs and other emerging mobile communication devices.
