VNT(TM) Technology Offers Perfect Match for Diesel Particulate Filters FRANKFURT, Germany, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Honeywell Turbo Technologies, the manufacturer of Garrett(R) turbochargers, has announced that its third generation VNT(TM) technology is featured on three flagship turbo diesel V8s unveiled at the IAA 2005 International Motor Show. Each of the new vehicles -- the Audi A8 4.2 TDI, BMW 745d and the Mercedes S 420 CDI -- are setting new standards in power, torque, fuel efficiency and emissions control with the help of the third generation Garrett(R) VNT(TM) turbochargers. "These stunning vehicles demonstrate the power of innovation and the power of partnership," said Adriane Brown, President and CEO of Honeywell Transportation Systems, of which Turbo Technologies is a business unit. "We are happy to be part of the journey in raising the bar of performance through the common pursuit of innovation and collaboration," added Ms. Brown. In each case, the Garrett(R) VNT(TM) coupled with Rotary Electronic Actuation (REA) has helped to propel the performance for V8 diesels to unprecedented levels while accommodating the higher engine temperatures associated with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) systems. The boosting technology has helped increase power ratings by up to 21% -- with all three engines delivering more than 300hp. As a result of these advances in technology, drivers of V8 diesels can experience exceptional performance motoring while benefiting from new standards of fuel economy and low levels of emissions. Honeywell first introduced its third generation VNT(TM) technology in 2004 in the 2 liter diesel category engines, which helped to deliver more power, more torque, higher maximum speed, greater acceleration and better fuel economy. "These latest new launches are indicative of a general trend sweeping across the diesel segment," according to Alexandre Ismail, Vice President and General Manager of Honeywell Turbo Technologies, Europe. "We have proven again that Honeywell's third generation VNT(TM) technology is a key enabler in delivering the power, torque, fuel efficiency and lower environmental impact demanded by manufacturers in every class of diesel cars." Honeywell's third generation VNT(TM) technology, combined with the use of REA, features a new vane shape, a new generation turbine wheel and better controllability -- all combining to deliver 130% of second generation VNT(TM) boost levels at just 90% of back pressure. A full range of turbochargers covering engines displacements from 1 to 4 liters is available. Honeywell International is a $26 billion diversified technology and manufacturing leader, serving customers worldwide with aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings, homes and industry; automotive products; turbochargers; and specialty materials.
