Kosmos Energy Ltd. (KOS) said Monday it made a major gas
discovery 125 kilometers off the coast of Mauritania with its
partner BP PLC (BP.LN).
The Orca-1 well is the latest of a series of successful gas
finds offshore Mauritania and Senegal. Kosmos says that the Orca-1
and Marsouin-1 wells have "de-risked up to 50 trillion cubic feet
of gas in place," adding that this is more than enough to support a
world-scale liquefied natural gas project.
"Orca is believed to be the largest deepwater [hydrocarbon]
discovery in the world so far this year," said Colin Smith, analyst
at Panmure Gordon, adding that Kosmos has 28% and BP 62%.
