Phillips 66 (PSX) said an equipment problem was causing above-normal gas emissions Friday at its refinery in Rodeo, Calif.
"An equipment malfunction occurred," the refinery said in a statement to the California Emergency Management Agency. "The incident resulted in a sulfur dioxide release to the atmosphere in excess of 500 pounds. A flaring event was initiated and is on-going."
The refinery added that workers are "in the process of isolating and repairing the problem."
The 120,000-barrel-a-day Rodeo refinery, built in 1896, is located in the San Francisco Bay area, northeast of the city.
