Novartis AG (NOVN.EB) said Tuesday that it will work with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) to advance its capacity in the field of artificial intelligence.

The Swiss pharmaceutical company said that it will establish an AI lab to improve its capabilities across the business, from research to commercialization.

Novartis highlighted cell and gene therapies as one of the areas where it would collaborate with Microsoft.

Satya Nadella, chief executive of the U.S. software company, said the partnership will combine Novartis's expertise in life sciences with the Azure cloud computing service and Microsoft AI.

"We aim to address some of the biggest challenges facing the life sciences industry," said Mr. Nadella.
