Harris Corporation Marks Delivery of 1,000th Warhead Replacement
Tactical Telemetry Module MELBOURNE, Fla., Feb. 12
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation , a leading supplier
of electronics for precision munitions, this week marked the
delivery of the 1,000th Harris-built Warhead Replacement Tactical
Telemetry Module (WRTTM) during a ceremony at its Phillip W. Farmer
Customer Briefing Center (CBC) in Melbourne. The WRTTM, used
onboard the AIM- 120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile
(AMRAAM), is used on training flights and provides weapon system
evaluators at Tyndall AFB, Florida with critical missile flight and
performance information, as well as command destruct capability
from launch until final impact. "The outstanding performance of
WRTTM over the course of 100 launches per year has been invaluable
to the entire AMRAAM program -- all the way from the developer to
the maintainer and warfighter," said Thomas J. Robillard, program
director, Counterair Joint Systems Program Office, United States
Air Force. "WRTTM has enabled a safe and robust training program
for our combat forces and has time and again provided evaluators
with flight data critical to improving AMRAAM capabilities and
performance." Attendees at the event included U.S. Air Force
personnel, industry suppliers, and current and retired executives
from the Harris Government Communications Systems Division (GCSD)
who have been involved in the AMRAAM/WRTTM program since its start
in 1991. The delivery ceremony included remarks by Harris and
military executives, as well as a luncheon and a tour of the
product display area at the CBC. Since the program's inception,
Harris has been awarded $125 million in AMRAAM contracts by the Air
Force. "This is a significant program milestone for Harris to
achieve over a 10- year period, and represents our highest
standards of customer intimacy and satisfaction," said Dan Pearson,
president, Defense Programs business unit, Harris GCSD. "We are
pleased that the Air Force continues to rely on WRTTM for its
ongoing weapons evaluation initiatives." The AIM-120 AMRAAM is
designed to take maximum advantage of the highly accurate,
long-range target detection capabilities offered by the advanced
radar systems of modern-day warplanes. The Harris WRTTM replaces
the warhead on the AMRAAM Missile during training flights from
Tyndall AFB, provides positioning and telemetry data to the ground
site, and allows the ground site to destroy the missile in flight
through a flight termination transponder. Harris GCSD, one of five
divisions within Harris Corporation, conducts advanced research
studies, develops prototypes, and produces and supports
state-of-the-art, assured communications(TM) and information
solutions that solve the mission-critical challenges of its
military and government customers, while serving as the technology
base for the company's diverse commercial businesses. Harris
Corporation, which also provides tactical radio, microwave,
broadcast, and network products and systems, serves customers in
