Harris Corporation Team and FAA Achieve Key Milestone In FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) Program Deployment MELBOURNE, Fla., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation today announced that the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) program, for which Harris is the prime contractor and system architect, has reached the first In-Service Decision (ISD) approval for Phase 1, which will enable the deployment of FTI into the National Airspace System (NAS). FTI will improve telecommunications and operations functions at more than 5,000 FAA facilities nationwide. "This is a major milestone in the program that will result in the deployment of FTI to 27 sites within Phase 1," said John O'Sullivan, FTI program vice president, Harris Government Communications Systems Division (GCSD). "The Harris FTI team is committed to fulfilling its mission of providing the most efficient and reliable telecommunications solution to the FAA, and this milestone achievement is the foundation for future deployment and implementation success." "We are very pleased that this major program milestone has been achieved," said Steve Dash, FAA Manager, Telecommunications Division. "This is a direct reflection of the strong cooperation and teamwork between the FAA and the Harris team in implementing this important program, which will be the primary means through which the FAA obtains telecommunications services for the next 15 years." The ISD is based on thorough testing to verify operational readiness, which includes both operational effectiveness and operational suitability. Among the sites to which FTI will be deployed first are the FAA's nationwide Air Route Traffic Control Centers, National Network Control Centers, William J. Hughes Technical Center, Aeronautical Center, Volpe and the Air Traffic Control System Command Center. Deployment planning for the second ISD phase, which will bring FTI to all other FAA sites, is expected to be completed by July 2004. Harris, acting as FTI systems integrator and prime contractor, is leading a team of top telecommunications companies consisting of BellSouth Corporation, Qwest Communications International, Inc., SBC Communications, Inc., Sprint and Verizon Communications. In addition, Raytheon Technical Services Company is performing on-site technical services and support for the FAA's facilities nationwide. Under terms of the contract, the Harris FTI team will consolidate the Leased Interfacility NAS Communications System, Data Multiplexing Network, Bandwidth Manager and the National Aviation Data Interchange Network into an integrated telecommunications infrastructure. The team will replace more than 35,000 circuits, upgrade switching and routing services, improve network monitoring and control, implement a state-of-the-art security system and provide network-engineering services. Harris GCSD, one of five divisions within Harris Corporation, conducts advanced research studies, develops prototypes and produces and supports state-of-the-art assured communications and information systems that solve the mission-critical communications challenges of its military and government customers, while serving as the technology base for the company's diverse commercial businesses.
