Using Information Technology to Improve Healthcare FALLS CHURCH,
Va., May 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dr. Bart Harmon, MD, MPH, and
chief medical officer of Harris Corporation's (NYSE:HRS) Healthcare
Solutions business, has been named to the American Health
Information Community (AHIC) Successor Transition Planning Group.
Dr. Harmon is one of 11 distinguished public-private sector
healthcare industry leaders in the U.S. to be named to the group.
The AHIC is a federal advisory body established in 2005 to make
recommendations about how to accelerate the nationwide adoption of
interoperable health care information technology. The goal of the
planning group is to transition the AHIC from a government advisory
group to a public-private organization that will maintain and
accelerate nationwide initiatives for using information technology
to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare in the U.S.
Completion of transition planning is scheduled for the fall of
2008. "The efficient implementation of secure, interconnected
healthcare IT will support higher quality healthcare and save
lives," said Dr. Harmon. "I am honored to be part of this group,
whose goal it is to continue the progress made during the past few
years by fostering the growth of a national health information
system, connecting and extending the many existing health
information technology components while empowering patients to have
more control over their health information and healthcare
experience." Dr. Harmon is a nationally recognized leader in
military healthcare and health information systems. Prior to
joining Harris, he was chief medical information officer and
director of information management for the Military Health System
of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). For more than 10 years Dr.
Harmon led electronic health record initiatives within the DoD. He
also chaired the work group that defined information-sharing
requirements between the DoD and the Veterans Health
Administration. Harris announced in March that the company was
selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to
implement the National Health Information Network (NHIN) Connect
project. The Connect project enables federal agencies to securely
exchange health information among agencies as well as with state,
tribal, local and private sectors - all with the goal of improving
