--Apple was considering adding a feature to iPhones that would allow users to buy and sell stocks but pulled back when markets took a downturn last year, CNBC reports, citing unnamed sources.

--The proposed feature was being developed in partnership with Goldman Sachs, the report said.

--The project started coming together after stocks soared in 2020 as retail investors started pouring dollars into mobile stock-trading platforms, particularly Robinhood Markets' popular app.

--Representatives for Apple and Goldman declined CNBC's request for comment.
