Exxon Mobil Corp. said late Wednesday that a safety instrument
was triggered at its Baytown oil refinery in Texas, leading to
emissions of carbon monoxide and other gases.
"Safety relief valve lifted resulting in emissions to the
atmosphere," the refinery said in a statement to the Texas
Commission on Environmental Quality. "Available information,
including fenceline monitoring conducted by ExxonMobil as a
precautionary measure, indicates no adverse environmental impact to
the site and surrounding community."
Exxon said the emissions happened Tuesday night, lasting more
than two hours. The incident happened at a Fluid Catalytic Cracking
Unit, it said.
The 561,000-barrel-a-day Baytown refinery is 25 miles east of
Houston.
