Emerson Electric Co. said sales rose 14% in its fiscal second quarter as demand across the manufacturers end markets holds up.

For the three months ended March 31, the St. Louis-based manufacturer posted a profit of $770 million, or $1.38 a share, compared with $675 million, or $1.13 a share, in the same quarter a year ago.

Earnings from continuing operations rose to $505 million, or 92 cents a share, from $429 million, or 72 cents a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out one-time items, adjusted earnings came to $1.09 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting adjusted earnings of 97 cents a share.

Sales rose 14%, to $3.76 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet were looking for sales of $3.64 billion.

Chief Executive Lal Karsanbhai said the results were lifted by strong demand across end markets.
