Consolidated Edison Inc. (ED) said Tuesday it is part of a coalition which filed a petition to challenge a Trump Administration rule which would eliminate stricter auto emission policies in California, New York and other states.

The company said it "believes that the Safer Affordable Fuel-Efficient Rule Part One: One National Program (SAFE Rule) will undermine efforts to achieve significant and cost-effective reductions in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions for New Yorkers."

According to Con Edison, the SAFE Rule withdraws a federal waiver allowing California and other states to set higher vehicle emission standards than those set by the federal government. Thirteen U.S. states have linked their emissions standards to California's, the company said.

Members of the coalition include Calpine Corp., Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, New York Power Authority and Seattle City Light, Con Ed said.

The company said it is promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and is also exploring the use of emission-free electric school buses.
