Malaysia Airlines has suspended delivery of 25 Boeing Co. (BA) 737 MAX jets that were to begin joining its fleet this year, citing the jet's prolonged global grounding following two fatal crashes.

The Malaysian flag-carrier on Wednesday said it made the decision "in view of the production stoppage and the delayed return to service of the 737 MAX."

The carrier had placed an order in 2016 for the single-aisle jets, with a list value of around $2.75 billion.

Chicago-based Boeing halted production of its best-selling plane this month, having assembled around 40 planes monthly since the MAX was grounded globally last March following two fatal crashes of the aircraft.

On Tuesday, Boeing said its deliveries hit a 14-year low in 2019. The company brought in new orders for just 246 commercial jets of all types, its lowest tally before cancellations and model swaps since 2003.
