UMB Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: UMBF) was recognized late yesterday afternoon by Congressman Barney Frank, Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee for being named the highest rated bank in the continental United States.

In the January 2010 issue, Forbes magazine evaluates America’s 100 largest banks. The rankings were based on criteria that measure asset quality, capital adequacy and profitability. The rankings for 2009 named UMB the second-best bank behind Bank of Hawaii.

During a ceremony today at the downtown Kansas City Public Library, Congressmen Frank, Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo., 5th district), and Dennis Moore (D-Kan., 3rd district) made an official Congressional Record presentation to UMB, and Frank stated, “happy to recognize the justifiably high rating from Forbes magazine … congratulations on the excellent work you have done.”

"We are incredibly proud of the values, legacy, and leadership that led to this distinguished recognition by Congress," said Mariner Kemper, chairman and chief executive officer of UMB Financial Corporation. "We have withstood the winds of change for nearly 100 years because we have built a house made from fundamental bricks of quality, diversity, and stability. Our roots speak to the strong values each of our associates represent – doing what is right, not just what is popular – is core to who we are."

"We graciously accept and take pride in this recognition," said Peter deSilva, president and chief operating officer of UMB Financial Corporation. "It speaks to our ability to focus and adhere to our responsible, time-tested business principles. We have a strict approach to fiscal responsibility and maintain a profound understanding of the people and businesses we serve – and our customers, shareholders and associates would not want it any other way."

Also in 2009, UMB Financial received recognition as being a top performer in Sandler O’Neill and Partners “2009 Bank and Thrift Sm-All Stars” report, a No. 5 ranking in a "stress test" conducted by SNL Financial to determine the best capitalized bank holding companies nationally, and a No. 21 ranking in Bank Insurance Market Research Group’s “2009 Who’s Who in Bank Wealth Management.” In 2008, Kemper was chosen “Community Banker of the Year” by American Banker.
