Starbucks Corp. (SBUX) Tuesday unveiled 2030 science-based targets for carbon, water and waste as part of the coffee chain's plans to become resource positive.
The Seattle company said it is targeting 50% reductions in carbon emissions in its direct operations and supply chain, and in the waste sent to landfills from its stores and manufacturing.
Starbucks said it also plans to conserve or replenish 50% of water withdrawal for direct operations and coffee production, with a focus on communities and basins with high water risk.
The company said its goal is to become resource positive by storing more carbon than it emits, eliminating waste and providing more clean, fresh water than it uses.
Starbucks said some of the strategies it will use to reach its goals include expanding plant-based menu options, shifting from single-use to reusable packaging, and developing more eco-friendly stores, operations, manufacturing and delivery.
