Equinix Selects Infinera for Metro Networks in North America and Asia
January 29 2008 - 12:39PM
Marketwired
SUNNYVALE, CA today announced that Equinix, Inc. (NASDAQ: EQIX)
has selected Infinera for its metro networks linking its Internet
Business Exchange(TM) (IBX) centers in major cities in North
America and Asia.
Equinix's IBX centers are critical hubs in the infrastructure of
the Internet, and the selection of Infinera illustrates the
importance of Infinera's large-scale photonic integration and
Bandwidth Virtualization(TM) technology in supporting the growth of
bandwidth-intensive Internet applications and websites.
Equinix is a leading global provider of network-neutral data
center and interconnection services, offering premium colocation,
traffic exchange and outsourced IT infrastructure solutions. Global
enterprises, content companies, systems integrators and network
service providers look to Equinix IBX centers for world-class
reliability and network diversity. Equinix IBX centers serve as
critical core hubs for IP networks and Internet operations
worldwide. With 37 IBX centers located in 17 strategic markets
across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, Equinix enables
customers to reliably operate their mission-critical infrastructure
on a global basis.
"Ten Gigs is the New One Gig"
Equinix selected Infinera because of the benefits and global
track record of the Infinera architecture. Scalability, speed and
flexibility of provisioning, and service density were important
attributes for Equinix to meet the needs of today's marketplace. In
particular, Infinera's Bandwidth Virtualization enables Equinix to
deploy large bandwidth quickly, and reconfigure it easily, rapidly,
and cost-effectively.
With many of the world's largest enterprises, content providers,
network service providers and financial institutions as customers,
Equinix also found that Infinera's DTN System met its high
standards for carrier-class reliability. In addition, Infinera's
successful deployment experience and customer acceptance in North
America, Europe, and Asia were crucial factors to Equinix as it was
seeking an optical system that had proven it could meet
international standards and requirements and function effectively
in multiple markets worldwide. Finally, Equinix was impressed by
Infinera's commitment to develop 100 Gigabit Ethernet solutions, a
technology Equinix regards as critical for meeting the needs of its
bandwidth-intensive customers in the future.
Equinix's Chief Technologist Lane Patterson highlighted the
importance of Infinera's unique architecture in helping it meet the
rapidly growing and often unpredictable needs of many of its
customers. "Some of the world's largest Internet content providers
rely on Equinix's network-rich interconnection hubs to facilitate
their high-performance content delivery operations," commented Mr.
Patterson. "To many of these companies, 10 Gigabits has become the
new 1 Gigabit, and their need for rapid provisioning of multiple 10
Gigabit wavelengths continues to grow. Infinera enables us to
respond quickly to this demand and to provide a highly scalable
solution for customers."
"We are very pleased to have Equinix as a customer," said
Infinera CEO Jagdeep Singh. "Equinix's interconnection hubs
comprise the core of the Internet, and Equinix's deployment of
Infinera is another demonstration of the critical role that
Infinera and its unique Bandwidth Virtualization capabilities are
playing in supporting today's Internet."
The Infinera DTN is a Digital ROADM for long-haul and metro core
networks, combining high-capacity DWDM transport, integrated
digital bandwidth management, and GMPLS-powered service
intelligence in a single platform.
