Media Alert: Check Point Protects against Microsoft Excel Zero-Day Vulnerability

Check Point� Software Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq:CHKP), the

Point users of SmartDefense� Services and the newly introduced IPS
Software Blade are already protected from an unpatched and publicly
available Microsoft Excel vulnerability, which could allow an
attacker to execute arbitrary code on an vulnerable system. Check
Point�s SmartDefense Services as well as its unique Software Blade
architecture and accompanying IPS�Software Blade�provide immediate
protection against such threats on existing security gateways
without need for additional hardware.
An attacker can take advantage of the vulnerability by creating
a specially crafted Excel file imbedded with a malicious Trojan and
enticing the user of a targeted system to open the file. The
vulnerability is known to affect users Microsoft Excel 2007 running
Windows Vista and XP operating systems. Microsoft has yet to
release a patch for the vulnerability, leaving systems without
preemptive protections in place open to attack.
�Unpatched, zero-day vulnerabilities pose the greatest threat to
