Applied Materials Inc.'s (AMAT) guidance for the current quarter was in line with Wall Street forecasts.

The company said Thursday it expects third-quarter earnings excluding special items between 67 cents and 75 cents a share on sales of $3.375 billion to $3.675 billion.

Analysts polled by FactSet had expected adjusted earnings of 70 cents a share on $3.55 billion in revenue.

A year earlier Applied Materials had adjusted earnings of $1.20 a share on $4.47 billion in revenue.

Shares rose 3.7% to $43.20 in after-hours trading as the company's second-quarter results beat analysts' expectations.
