Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. and Carrefour SA confirmed on Tuesday that they are in exploratory talks for a potential combination.

French grocer Carrefour said it had been approached by the Circle K owner in a friendly manner and that discussions were "very preliminary."

The Canadian convenience store operator said the terms of a potential deal are still subject to discussion. There is no certainty these talks will result in an agreement or transaction, Couche-Tard said.
