Airbus SE (AIR.FR) said Tuesday that it will add capacity at its plant in Toulouse, France, for the production of its narrowbody A321 jets.

The European plane maker will create new capabilities by mid-2022 through the modernization of its current A320 production system, it said.

"The new facilities will provide more flexibility for A321 production, while keeping the overall single aisle industrial capacity in Toulouse flat," Airbus said.

Contacted by Dow Jones, a spokeswoman said that the company hadn't set production goals yet for its new facility.

The A320neo family of jets is in high demand and there is currently only one European assembly line based in Hamburg, Germany, to assemble A321 jets, the company said.
