• 72 percent of parents said they immediately check their phones as soon as they wake up on Christmas morning
  • 86 percent said their children have complained that they spend too much time on their phones
  • More than half of those surveyed, 53 percent, said they’ve missed out on an activity or bonding moment with their child because they were preoccupied with a phone or another device
  • The average parent will spend four hours a day on their devices during the holiday season––amounting to a total of 80 hours (more than three days) across all their digital devices

While tons of attention is paid every year to what kids want for Christmas, what do most parents want? According to a new survey, taking a break from their digital devices to spend more time with their children is at the top of their list. Groupon––as part of the company’s Rewrite the List campaign that encourages people to add at least one experience they can do with others to their holiday wish list––asked 2,000 parents about their digital device habits and 80 percent revealed they want a digital detox this holiday season.

The study––conducted by OnePoll and commissioned by Groupon––found that 72 percent of parents said that they typically check their phone as soon as they wake up on Christmas Day. Eighty-six percent of parents said they’ve had their child complain about spending too much time on their phone and more than half of those surveyed, 53 percent, said that they’ve missed out on an activity or bonding moment with their child because they were preoccupied with their phone or another device.

“Given some of the staggering stats that we found from speaking to parents, it comes as no surprise that eight in 10 are looking to take a break from their devices during the holidays,” said Groupon’s Head of Experiences Brian Fields. “While devices are critical tools that we use for managing our lives and buying gifts for everyone on our list, it’s also important for parents to set aside some time over the next few weeks to make and cherish memories with their children.”

Other interesting survey findings included: more than half of parents, 51 percent, said they check social media more frequently during the holidays and 43 percent of parents said they spend more time on their phone on Christmas Day than any other day. In addition, the average parent will spend four hours a day on their devices during the holiday season––amounting to a total of 80 hours (more than three days) across all their digital devices in a single holiday season.

When it comes to planning the perfect digital detox, parents identified going to the movies, attending a holiday concert, traveling somewhere, decorating the tree, learning to ice skate, baking cookies, touring a museum, singing Christmas carols, visiting a zoo/aquarium and attending a holiday light show as the top ways they can unplug with the family.

To help parents get a digital detox jumpstart, Groupon curated a collection of experiences grouped into six categories, including:

  • Family Fun
  • Beauty and Relaxation
  • City Explorer
  • Night Out
  • Foodie Frenzy
  • Bucket List
