Siemens AG (SIE.XE) said Thursday that it has partnered with Juwi, a German renewable-energy company, to develop small-scale energy grids for the mining industry.

Under the agreement, the two companies will work to develop and roll-out 'microgrids' allowing the transfer of power from renewable energy sources to mines. The goal is to create a standardized solution for the industry to simplify the use of renewable energy in the sector, particularly for mine sites that operate off the grid, Siemens said.
