General Dynamics Information Technology said Thursday it was awarded a contract to provide artificial intelligence technologies to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The multiple award has a total estimated value of $49 million over a five-year base period, the company said.

The HHS hopes to utilize artificial-intelligence technology to reduce backlog, cut costs and perform key functions.

Kamal Narang, the head of General Dynamics Information Technology's Health Sector, said, "GDIT will utilize our expertise in AI, blockchain and other next-generation technologies to help transform HHS' business processes and enhance their mission delivery."

General Dynamics Information Technology is a business unit of General Dynamics Corp. (GD).
