--Facebook Inc. (FB) said it plans to spend $300 million to strengthen local news coverage around the world, Reuters reported Tuesday.

--The money will go to increase resources for covering local news, recruit and place trainee journalists in local newsrooms and research the ways technology can help local news gathering, the report said.

--Facebook said the effort is an attempt to help newsrooms around the world create viable business models, the report said.
