J. Allen Brack will take over as the new head of Activision Blizzard, Inc.'s (ATVI) Blizzard Entertainment unit on Oct. 17, succeeding Mike Morhaime, who will stay on a strategic adviser, the company said Tuesday.

Mr. Brack, a gaming veteran, most recently served as executive producer and senior vice president for "World of Warcraft."

Blizzard Entertainment publishes some of the company's biggest console and PC franchises, including "World of Warcraft," and is a significant contributor to the company's overall results.

Mr. Morhaime, a founder of Blizzard Entertainment, joined Activision Blizzard as president and chief executive as part of the 2008 merger of Activision Inc. and Vivendi's games business. As part of the current executive transition, Activision Blizzard is retiring the CEO title.

Shares, which outperform the market with a 23% increase this year, edged up in after-hours trading to $77.99.
