Chevron Corp. (CVX) reported flaring of gas emissions at its Richmond refinery in northern California, but said the plant continued to operate normally.

"A pressure release device that leads to a flare gas system was opened," the refinery said in a statement to the California Emergency Management Agency. "The incident resulted in a potential release of sulfur dioxide in excess of 500 pounds flaring event."

Chevron said the incident happened Monday afternoon, and no injuries were reported.

The 250,000-barrel-a-day refinery is located just north of Oakland.
