Bank of America, BlackRock , Luby's , Netflix begin this week of heavy earnings announcements.

The New York Fed releases its Empire State Manufacturing Survey for July. Economists see the index level contracting to 20.1 from last month's 25.

President Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin are expected to meet in Helsinki. Among the topics up for discussion: civil war in Syria, Russian aggression in Ukraine, and North Korea's nuclear weapons.

U.S. Census Bureau releases June retail sales data. Analysts expect sales to increase for the fourth straight month, signaling the consumer picked up spending in the second quarter.

It's Prime Day (and a half). The biggest shopping event of the year at Amazon.com begins at 3 p.m. eastern time. This year, Amazon is extending the shopping to 36 hours from 2017's 30 hours. Also new this year, Prime members will get an additional 10% off sale items and discounts on popular items at Whole Foods Market stores.

The International Monetary Fund releases its World Economic Outlook.

China releases second-quarter GDP, along with industrial production and retails sales data.

Tuesday 17

Johnson & Johnson, Comerica , UnitedHealth Group , Goldman Sachs Group , Prologis , CSX host quarterly conference calls.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell is set to deliver his semiannual monetary policy report to the Senate Banking Committee.

National Association of Home Builders reports its July housing market index.

Wednesday 18

Novartis, Morgan Stanley , U.S. Bancorp , M&T Bank , Northern Trust , Alcoa , eBay report results.

U.S. Census Bureau reports June housing starts. The consensus estimate calls for the level to reach a seasonally adjusted 1.320 million units.

Fed beige book is released.

Thursday 19

BB&T , Bank of New York Mellon , Philip Morris International , Fifth Third Bancorp , Domino's Pizza , KeyCorp , Snap-on , Microsoft host conference calls.

U.S. Commerce Department begins two days of public hearings in its investigation to determine whether auto imports pose a national security threat. The Trump administration is reportedly considering 25% tariffs on that basis.

Weekly jobless claims are reported.

Philadelphia Fed releases its Manufacturing Business Outlook Survey.

Friday 20

SunTrust Banks , Stanley Black & Decker , General Electric , Honeywell International , Celanese , Gentex round out the week's earnings announcements.

Standard & Poor's reviews both Russia and Greece credit rating.

St. Louis Fed James Bullard gives a presentation on the U.S. economy and monetary policy before the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.

Saturday 21

G-20 finance ministers and central bankers meet in Buenos Aires. Trade war talks are likely to be the main topic of discussion.
