Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of
The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), was presented yesterday with the
Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI) “Emergency Assistance Award” for
its outstanding power restoration efforts after Winter Storm Riley
and Winter Storm Quinn hit Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Ohio in
March 2018.
The award is given to select EEI member companies to recognize
their outstanding response assisting other electric companies in
power restoration efforts after service has been disrupted by
severe weather conditions or other natural events. The winners are
chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination
process. IPL received the award during EEI’s annual convention in
San Diego.
“On behalf of everyone at IPL, we are honored to be recognized
for EEI’s Emergency Assistance Award,” said IPL President and CEO
Craig Jackson. “We take great pride in serving our customers in
Indianapolis and helping our industry colleagues in times of great
need.”
On March 1, Winter Storm Riley hit the northeast and
mid-Atlantic and was quickly followed by Winter Storm Quinn.
Tropical storm force winds, hurricane force gusts, coastal
flooding, and heavy rain and snow left more than 670,000 customers
without power across Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Ohio. IPL sent
15 line workers more than 950 miles away to help restore power to
customers over the course of 15 days.
“Mutual assistance is a hallmark of the electric power industry.
When a disaster impacts a region, neighboring electric companies
quickly respond to assist,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn. “The work
of IPL’s crews to restore power to customers impacted by Winter
Storm Riley and Winter Storm Quinn is a terrific example of mutual
assistance in action and our industry’s commitment to serving our
customers.”
IPL was also recognized by EEI earlier this year for restoration
efforts after Hurricane Irma, and in 2016 and 2017 for efforts and
assistance in restoring service to customers in both Indiana and
Michigan following severe winter weather.
