New Jersey American Water is preparing to invest $6 million to replace approximately 7,000 feet of aging wastewater main in its Lakewood service area. The company is replacing wastewater main that has reached the end of its useful life with new main along South Lake Drive, Kimball Road, Caranetta Drive, Sunset Road and James Street.

"With this $6 million investment in new wastewater mains, our customers in this rapidly growing area will experience improved service reliability," stated Kevin Keane, senior director of Operations for New Jersey American Water’s Coastal Region. "These wastewater collection improvements are part of New Jersey American Water's multimillion dollar program to accelerate the renewal of water and wastewater infrastructure that is reaching the end of its useful life."

New Jersey American Water’s local qualified contractor Ferreira Construction Co. will being work in June and is expected to be completed by the end of September. Project work hours will be determined by Lakewood Township, with most of the work being completed during normal daytime hours and some specific tasks required to be completed during nighttime hours. Final street restoration will be completed in the spring 2019.

Wastewater service to the area will be maintained during construction. The company doesn’t anticipate any major service disruptions; however, once the new main is installed, the customer-owned service laterals will need to be connected to the new wastewater main. When this work occurs, there may be a one- to two-hour interruption of service. Residents will be notified in advance and the day of connection if any interruption is needed.

New Jersey American Water will be hosting an Open House for any residents that have questions about the upcoming project on May 30th at its Lakewood Office, 100 James Street (building on the left) from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

For the public’s and workers’ safety, traffic restrictions and/or alternating traffic patterns are likely to occur during work hours. Traffic control will be coordinated with the Lakewood Police Department and sections of roads will be closed to traffic at times with detours. Please follow detours as posted. Service for trash, mail, school, buses and emergency vehicles will be maintained during traffic disruptions. New Jersey American Water values the safety of its workers and advises drivers and pedestrians to take caution in the vicinity of work sites.
