International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Tuesday.

Banks were among the companies with ADRs that traded actively.

The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts fell 0.4% to 151.96. The European index decreased 0.5% to 140.23, the Asian index dropped 0.1% to 178.87, the Latin American index declined 1.2% to 261.79 and the emerging markets index decreased 0.1% to 330.96.

ADRs of BP PLC rose 0.5% to $44.80 after delivering first-quarter earnings that topped consensus forecasts.

ADRs of Barclays PLC fell 1.1% to $11.41 after chairman front runner Gerry Grimstone unexpectedly pulled out of the race to head the British bank, prompting the company to look externally.

ADRs of Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC fell 0.7% to $7.43 after the bank said it intends to close 162 branches in England and Wales as it prepares to reintegrate its Williams & Glyn business into its core bank.

ADRs of Sanofi fell 0.5% to $76.28 after the pharmaceutical company said it, along with Regeneron, would cut prices in a bid to jumpstart sales.
