Airbus SE (AIR.FR) said Wednesday that it has signed a collaboration agreement with Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (RR.LN) to test the latter's UltraFan demonstrator.

The UltraFan is a jet-engine design aimed at both widebody and single-aisle planes and is more efficient than Rolls-Royce's first-generation Trent engine, according to the plane maker. In future, Airbus plans to use UltraFan engines in long-range aircraft.

Airbus said the program will be cofunded by European Union-led research program Clean Sky 2, which focuses on developing technology to reduce emissions.
