MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- This year, General Mills is partnering with Rube Goldberg, Inc. to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINE® CONTEST®. To honor 30 years of invention and creativity, General Mills is bringing science to life in the most unexpected and imaginative places and ways.

As part of its larger partnership with Rube Goldberg, Inc., General Mills Cereal introduces specially-marked boxes of iconic General Mills cereals, including Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cocoa Puffs, Cookie Crisp, Lucky Charms and Reese’s Puffs. Each box includes easy-to-follow instructions to transform the packaging into one of six Rube Goldberg-inspired simple machines.

Beginning this month, General Mills Cereal will introduce specially-marked boxes of iconic General Mills cereals, including Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cocoa Puffs, Cookie Crisp, Lucky Charms and Reese's Puffs as part of its larger partnership with Rube Goldberg, Inc. Each box includes easy-to-follow instructions to transform the packaging into one of six Rube Goldberg-inspired simple machines, bringing fun and S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education right to families' homes.

"The desire for creativity and family fun at the breakfast table is intrinsic to General Mills Cereals," said Hope Zeckmeister, Sr. Marketing Communications Planner. "It is so important to make S.T.E.M. approachable to get kids engaged and excited about it early and often. Through this partnership with Rube Goldberg, Inc. we are able to introduce S.T.E.M. elements to curious inventors by infusing physics principles into our boxes, creating the opportunity for interactive learning."

In addition to creating the simple machines from cereal boxes, inventive families can put their machines to good use by submitting their creations for a chance to win one of twenty $20,000 college scholarships. Because there's nothing better than the gift of learning, the scholarship can be used for the winner's own college education or given to a person of their choosing. For official rules, visit www.RubeCerealMachines.com.

"Similar to our annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest this promotion is part of a larger partnership with General Mills that is designed to inspire creativity, teamwork and invention at the breakfast table.," said Jennifer George, the Legacy Director of Rube Goldberg, Inc -- and Rube Goldberg's granddaughter.  "We are thrilled to partner with General Mills to get families thinking about S.T.E.M. in their own way -- and to give builders the chance to win a college scholarship.  What's better than the gift of education!"

Each year, it designates an official task for participants to complete. This year the organization partnered with General Mills Cereal for the contest year's official task to "Pour a Bowl of Cereal." Participants, from elementary school through college, will compete to build a machine that pours a bowl of their favorite cereal.
