Registration Open Now Through October 2, 2017

For college students interested in gaining real-world trading experience, TD Ameritrade1, announced today open registration for the fourth-annual thinkorswim Challenge. This year’s competition features new registration options - students may now form smaller trading teams than in previous years - and will offer upgraded educational tools to participating teams.

Undergraduate students interested in participating in the virtual trading competition can, now through October 2, 2017, register themselves and team members for the thinkorswim Challenge.

The thinkorswim Challenge is offered through TD Ameritrade U, an award-winning2 educational program for professors and college-run organizations that provides free access to paperMoney®, the virtual trading version of the thinkorswim desktop and mobile applications – both of which are recognized as advanced technology for sophisticated traders.3

“TD Ameritrade U has brought financial education and real-world trading opportunities to more than 500 universities across 50 states since its launch,” says Lee McAdoo, managing director of education at TD Ameritrade. “Approximately 500 professors have adopted TD Ameritrade U as a teaching strategy, which has helped us reach more than thirty-thousand students in the past two years alone.”

TD Ameritrade’s 2017 Young Money survey found that 1 in 5 young millennials have started investing in the stock market, while almost half of those who are not investing say they don’t know how to invest. Through the thinkorswim Challenge, TD Ameritrade has made headway in getting thousands of students involved in learning about the markets. Of all the students who have tapped into TD Ameritrade U over a four-year period, one in six has participated in the thinkorswim Challenge.

“TD Ameritrade recognizes the need for further financial education in schools, as well as access to trading platforms that would allow students to test their trading theories,” added McAdoo. “TD Ameritrade U and the thinkorswim Challenge has become that outlet for students, providing them with additional preparation for future real-world investing and trading.”

New to the thinkorswim ChallengeTD Ameritrade U wants to make the thinkorswim Challenge more widely available to all college students, so for the first year ever, students may register in teams of two individuals. By allowing students to assemble in pairs of two, the hope is to bring the Challenge to a wider student network. Interested students will still have the option to register in teams of three and four, as they have had in the past. In 2016, team enrollment was up 11 percent from the year prior with a total of 726 teams participating in the trading competition.

TD Ameritrade U will also make its newly enhanced educational tools available to participating teams of students. Each year, students have access to TD Ameritrade’s full trading support system including 24/7 expert assistance, chat room support, trading demos and in-platform webcast streams. TD Ameritrade recently made advancements to the daily thinkorswim webcast, Swim Lessons, transforming it from a listen-only channel to an in-platform, live video stream. Students will now have the opportunity to watch their favorite Swim Lessons presenters each day, as well as special guests and TD Ameritrade experts, talk about market events and trading strategies.

Accepting the TD Ameritrade U thinkorswim ChallengeTo participate, teams made up of two to four individuals who are students at the same postsecondary educational institution must register at www.thinkorswimchallenge.com. The competition is open to the first 2,000 teams who register. Registration is now open and closes on Monday, October 2, 2017, at 11:59 p.m. EDT. The four-week competition officially kicks off on Monday, October 9, 2017, and runs through Friday, November 3, 2017.

The thinkorswim Challenge teams are responsible for managing one virtual portfolio during the entire competition and will do so by placing qualifying paper trades during each trading week. Prizes will be awarded weekly to the top team with the highest percentage gain in the aggregate value of their portfolio at the end of each trading week. At the conclusion of the competition, an additional prize will be awarded to the three teams with the highest percentage gains in their portfolios overall and to their respective schools. Individual prizes include iPads, Amazon gift cards, up to $3,500 deposited into a TD Ameritrade brokerage account, and up to $30,000 for the schools.
