Citizens Bank today marked the start of Hunger Action Month by announcing $1.2 million in contributions to 46 nonprofit groups throughout the communities it serves, as part of its year-round Citizens Helping Citizens Fight Hunger initiative.

“Food insecurity can be devastating and impacts the ability of our children to learn and grow and for families to thrive,” said Barbara Cottam, Head of Corporate Affairs for Citizens Bank. “One hungry family or individual is one too many. Through our partnerships with food banks and other food programs in our local communities, we are making a difference for our neighbors not just during Hunger Action Month, but all year long.”

The $1.2 million in contributions provides 3.6 million meals to those in need throughout Citizens’ service area as part of the bank’s effort to eliminate hunger in its local communities. Citizens colleagues have also donated their time by logging more than 5,000 volunteer hours last year to support food banks, food pantries, and other hunger relief organizations.

According to Feeding America, one out of every eight people and one out of every six children struggle with hunger. During Hunger Action Month the bank will hold a footprint-wide food drive and colleagues will be donating non-perishable food items to help stock shelves of local food programs.

Citizens Helping Citizens Fight Hunger is part of the bank’s broader Citizens Helping Citizens program, which addresses four key areas: hunger, economic development, financial education and volunteerism. Get more information about Citizens Bank’s community initiatives online.
