ATLANTA ,
June 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- As
the school year ends and summer begins, Georgia Power is once again
hosting a series of statewide Learning Power summer camps
that focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The
camps cultivate fundamental skills in the STEM areas and reach
hundreds of students every year. The four-day camps take place
throughout June and July with students already registered from
local elementary schools across the state.
Georgia Power's Learning Power education program is
rooted in the company's longstanding commitment to improving
education in Georgia. Since the
program's inception in 2011, the company has reached more than
405,000 students and hosted more than 16,700 individual STEM
events. Learning Power education coordinators present
STEM-related lessons highlighting energy basics such as simple
circuits and energy efficiency, in addition to activities that help
students understand how energy is made and distributed. During the
2016-2017 school year, Georgia Power hosted nearly 2,800 events in
schools, reaching more than 70,000 Georgia students.
"Learning is a year-round and lifelong endeavor and we are
honored to support the work of our state's schools through Georgia
Power's signature summer camps and new partnership with the Atlanta
Braves," said Johnna Robinson,
community development manager for Georgia Power. "In addition to
our commitment to the communities we serve, supporting education
initiatives help to ensure that Georgia Power and other companies
have access to the highly skilled, well trained workforce of the
future."
In addition to the company's annual summer camps, Georgia
Power has announced a new partnership with the Atlanta Braves to
decrease summer learning loss among fourth and fifth grade students
through an interactive math and reading digital learning course –
the Summer Slugger Program. The baseball-themed program,
which reinforces key math and reading skills, will take place at
participating schools and non-profit summer enrichment programs
such as Atlanta Public Schools,
Boys & Girls Clubs and the Latin American
Association.
Georgia Power's commitment to education spans its more
than 100-year history and is emphasized companywide. The company
offers free resources for educators including interactive diagrams,
an online energy calculator, access to power plant tours and more.
Other efforts to enhance and improve education in Georgia include partnerships with groups such
as Junior Achievement and assistance grants for new teachers
awarded annually across the state. For more information about
