Memorial Junior High School Students Go Behind the Scenes with “Dawn Helps Save Wildlife” at Shedd Aquarium

Today students from Memorial Junior High School in Lansing, IL went behind the scenes at Shedd Aquarium to see animal care and recovery in action, as winners of Shedd and Dawn’s NextGen Animal Responders contest. The Chicago-area contest, which was part of a national in-classroom and web accessible STEM curriculum called NextGen Animal Responders launched in January, encouraged teachers and students to submit video entries to demonstrate their exemplary efforts in the appreciation of wildlife conservancy and answer simple questions about why preserving wildlife is important. As grand prize winners, the class from Memorial Junior High School received a special trip to Dawn’s wildlife partner Shedd Aquarium to learn more about animal care and conservation, including protecting and rehabilitating aquatic animals.

“Shedd has been committed to working with response and rescue organizations globally for over 50 years and the urgency to protect animals and their environments is greater than ever,” said Bridget Coughlin, Shedd Aquarium president and CEO. “Dawn and Shedd both share a similar passion for wildlife conservation as well as a shared mission of educating and inspiring the world about the wellbeing of animals, habitat conservation, and the health of our oceans. We’re happy to see the students of Memorial Junior High School working together and we hope their curiosity and interest about the conservation and protection of wildlife continues throughout their lifetime.”

Memorial Junior High’s winning video “Protect the Future of Wildlife” asks viewers to take small steps towards protecting wildlife such as cutting up plastic soda-rings before discarding, using reusable grocery bags and properly throwing away balloons so they don’t end up harming marine wildlife. During the field trip at Shedd, the winning students interacted with rescued animals and got an exclusive behind the scenes look at Shedd’s animal hospital, Microbiome Lab, Caribbean Reef exhibit and more. “These students are the perfect example of how the next generation of animal stewards can take a hands-on approach to helping preserve and protect wildlife,” said Mandy Ciccarella, Dawn Communications Manager. “Wildlife and environmental protection is vital and important to the Dawn brand and we are proud to be partners with Shedd Aquarium.”

Dawn and Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium national in-classroom and web accessible STEM curriculum called NextGen Animal Responders is part of the larger Dawn Helps Save Wildlife commitment with an aim to connect teachers and students with a singular goal, educating the next generation about the importance of wildlife conservation.
