Professor Broggi to Receive IEEE Medal and Present His Visionary Ideas for Autonomous Driving Technology at the 2017 IEEE Vision, Innovation, and Challenges Summit

Ambarella, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMBA) a leading developer of low-power, HD and Ultra HD video processing semiconductors, today announced that IEEE will honor Professor Alberto Broggi with the IEEE Medal for Environmental and Safety Technologies, with citation, “for leadership in vehicular environmental perception, and for setting worldwide milestones in safe and reliable intelligent vehicles.” The award will be presented at this year’s IEEE Honors Ceremony to be held on May 25 at The Palace Hotel, San Francisco.

IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization with more than 400,000 members in 160 countries; every year IEEE recognizes the work and entrepreneurship of some of the greatest minds of our time who have made a lasting impact on society for the benefit of humanity. The IEEE Medal for Environmental and Safety Technologies is presented to individuals or a team for their outstanding accomplishments in the application of technology in the fields of interest of IEEE that improve the environment and/or public safety.

“Professor Broggi’s pioneering activities in the field of vehicular robotics are recognized worldwide as milestones that have shaped the early stages of perception for intelligent vehicles and the leading efforts in autonomous driving,” said Dr. Fermi Wang, CEO and co-founder of Ambarella. “As a scientist at the University of Parma, he envisioned computer vision as the main technology to empower vehicles to intelligently understand the environment and ultimately drive by themselves. As an energetic entrepreneur, Professor Broggi created the VisLab startup, and organized unique autonomous driving challenges, inspiring many other companies and car makers that followed with similar activities. Professor Broggi is now General Manager at VisLab, which Ambarella acquired in 2015, aiming at transitioning his visionary technology from research to industry-leading products.”

The award ceremony will immediately follow the IEEE Vision, Innovation, and Challenges Summit, where Prof. Broggi will deliver an invited speech on the visionary ideas that helped craft and keep together a successful group of top-level engineers who have been shaping the autonomous driving technology.

The award consists of a gold medal, bronze replica, certificate, and honorarium of $20,000, which Prof. Broggi is donating to the University of Parma as recognition of the importance of education of young researchers. The cash prize will be matched by Ambarella, creating a $40,000 fund to support students with grants in a two-year program to focus on computer vision applications for safety.

The 2017 IEEE Honors Ceremony will be broadcast live on May 25, 2017 at 7:00 PM PDT, courtesy of IEEE.tv via IEEE Transmitter at http://transmitter.ieee.org/honors-ceremony-2017/.
