11:03 ET - Economist and Nobel prize laureate Joseph Stiglitz encouraged the countries of Latin America to unite against the coming U.S. protectionism signaled by Donald Trump during remarks at a forum in Bogota on the future of Colombia. In particular, he said that Colombia should leverage its relationship with Mexico, Chile and Peru - members of the Pacific Alliance trading bloc - to improve economic development and trade. "It's necessary that Latin America draws up its own rules for 21st century trade in the region," he said. At the forum, sponsored by the University of Rosario and El Tiempo newspaper, he also encouraged Colombia not to skimp on needed spending to implement its landmark peace treaty with Marxist guerrillas, even if it means incurring additional debt.
