Livio DeSimone, a chemical engineer who served as chairman and
chief executive of 3M Co. in the 1990s, died Tuesday, the St. Paul,
Minn.-based company said. He was 80 years old.
Mr. DeSimone, known as "Desi," grew up in Montreal as a son of
Italian immigrants and earned a chemical engineering degree at
McGill University before joining 3M in 1957 and spending 43 years
at the company, whose myriad products include Scotch tape, Post-it
Notes and supplies used in making smartphones and computers. He
spoke five languages fluently and had overseas posts in Brazil and
Australia.
In 1995, Mr. DeSimone announced a spinoff of 3M's imaging and
data-storage businesses and the closure of units making videotape
and audiotape, sapped by overseas competition. He served as
chairman and CEO from 1991 to 2001.
