Thirty LifePoint facilities experienced less than one percent early elective deliveries in 2015

November is Prematurity Awareness Month, and the March of Dimes is proud to recognize LifePoint Health® (NASDAQ: LPNT) for giving babies across the country a healthier start to life. This November, 30 LifePoint facilities will be recognized for successfully reducing the number of elective inductions and cesarean deliveries performed before 39 weeks of pregnancy to less than one percent (1%) of all deliveries.

“We’re so proud of our facilities and the dedication of our physicians and nurses across the country,” said Russell Holman, MD, chief medical officer of LifePoint Health. “They’ve embraced the need to address the problems associated with early elective deliveries, and have implemented practices and processes aimed at reducing unnecessary inductions. They’ve also taken great care to educate patients on the importance of going full-term. This is yet another powerful way we are making communities healthier.”

“The last weeks of pregnancy are critical, as babies aren’t just putting on weight; they are undergoing important development of the brain, lungs and other vital organs,” says Edward R.B. McCabe, MD, PhD, March of Dimes senior vice president and chief medical officer. “This is a tremendous accomplishment, and we commend LifePoint Health and these facilities for being a champion for babies with their quality improvement efforts.”

Babies born even just a few weeks early have higher rates of hospitalization and illness than full-term infants, according to the March of Dimes. Although the overall threat is small, the risk of death more than doubles for infants born at 37 weeks of pregnancy when compared to babies born at 40 weeks, for all races and ethnicities. Babies who survive an early birth are at higher risk of facing lifelong health challenges, such as breathing problems, cerebral palsy and learning disabilities.

Key to the hospitals’ success has been helping to educate communities that “Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait.” To help the facilities raise awareness, March of Dimes provided participating LifePoint hospitals with both professional and consumer education materials about the critical importance of full-term pregnancy to the health and well-being of babies.

LifePoint is committed to this important work and will continue supporting its facilities with tools, resources and strategies that will help them reduce early elective deliveries. The goal is for all LifePoint facilities to achieve this milestone and recognition in future years.
