Trucking Group Starts Meeting With Trump Transition Team

The American Trucking Associations, the largest group
representing trucking companies in Washington, said Wednesday it
has already started meeting with the Donald Trump transition team
as the industry prepares for a possible new look at regulations due
to hit operators next year.
ATA chief Chris Spears said in a statement that the group hopes
to work "closely with the new administration on issues that will
allow the trucking industry to continue to grow and move America
forward."
Trucking companies are preparing to meet a Dec. 31, 2017
deadline to equip all trucks with electronic logging devices
measuring their hours on the road. The rule has divided segments of
the industry, with smaller truckers complaining about the cost and
shipping customers arguing that it will drive some companies out of
business and leave bigger operators free to raise prices.
Mr. Spears said he expects Mr. Trump to increase spending on
roads and bridges, one issue that the president-elect and Democrat
Hillary Clinton largely agreed on during the campaign.
During the campaign, he highlighted the need to create jobs, and
recognized that improving our nation's infrastructure is critical
to strengthening the economy," said Mr. Spears, adding "we look
forward to working with President-elect Trump on a host of issues,
including long-term, sustainable infrastructure funding, tax reform
and fair and free trade."
Shares in trucking company stocks, which generally had been
rising in the days before the election, largely were moving upward
in early trading Wednesday. Landstar System Inc., a Jacksonville,
Fla., carrier specializing in industrial transport, was a leading
early gainer, with shares rising 2.7% to $76.85, nearly a two-year
high.
