RadNet Wins HHS “A Bill You Can Understand” Design Challenge
September 30 2016 - 8:00AM
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that
RadNet is the first place winner in its “A Bill You Can Understand”
design and innovation challenge. The competition’s purpose was to
elicit new approaches to medical billing, cited as a frequent point
of confusion for patients. Prize 1 for the Easiest Bill to
Understand was awarded to RadNet.
RadNet (NASDAQ:RDNT) is a national leader in providing
high-quality, cost-effective diagnostic imaging services. With 310
centers, it is the largest network of owner-operated imaging
centers in the U.S.
One of the Federal judges who evaluated the submissions said of
RadNet’s design: “This bill is easy to understand—a great
presentation of app and paper bill that is not over-simplified.
It’s a patient-first approach for the episode of care, and a clear
depiction of how insurance is factored into patient’s cost of
care.”
More than 80 healthcare organizations, creative agencies and
technology companies submitted designs for the challenge. RadNet
created a solution that keeps the bill concise, while still
including all pertinent information in a plain-language,
color-coded, easy-to-read format. In particular, RadNet focused on
adaptability—a design that reflects a patient’s real-world
experience. Uninsured patients, for example, or patients who have
seen multiple physicians get greater clarity on their medical
bill.
“We take a patient-centered approach to everything we do,” said
Dr. Howard Berger, President and CEO of RadNet. “Our long track
record as a medical provider gives us that front-line perspective
on the kind of care patients need, on what they’re experiencing. We
carry that into our technology products, our services, our
partnerships, everything—including design. That is what drives all
of our innovation.”
The “A Bill You Can Understand” challenge was sponsored by AARP
and administered by the design agency Mad*Pow. Winners were
announced at the 10th Annual Health 2.0 Fall Conference in Santa
Clara, Calif. RadNet’s submission, including a video narration of
the company’s approach, can be viewed at

“We’re honored to receive this award,” said Dr. Berger.
“Healthcare is increasingly complex, and we appreciate that we can
be part of a solution that makes a difference for
everyone—patients, providers and payers.”
